Adelia Ann Lindstrom, a rising star in the world of Grand Prix jumping, lives a charmed life until the day her parents’ vehicle plunges off a canyon road. In what appears to be a serendipitous meeting with billionaire venture capitalist Miles Bremen, she finds herself drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Adelia believes she has met the man of her dreams. However, Miles and his twin sister, Karolin, share a dark secret, and Adelia’s meeting Miles is no accident. Adelia doesn’t know that she has been targeted for her uncanny resemblance to Karolin to be a surrogate mother for her. Karolin, physically and emotionally abused as a teen, cannot have children. Adelia has been chosen as The One in an unholy pact between the twins to bare the child that Karolin desperately seeks.
It is said that when one door closes another door opens. When Adelia loses her parents, she gains a devoted friend in Detective David Weiss, the investigating detective of her parents’ fatal accident, whose feelings for her will lead him to be her savior.
After burying her parents, she returns to the Grand Prix arena and is slated to ride in Bridgehampton, L.I. at one of the premier events in the horse show jumping world, the Hampton Class. The Hamptons prove to be lucky for Adelia. In a heart-stopping riding performance, she comes in second place to an Olympic gold medalist and is reunited with playboy/businessman Miles in a sexually passionate love affair. When Miles, impulsively proposes; she is swept away in a whirlwind of romance. Obsessive and possessive, Miles whisks Adelia away on his Learjet to his horse farm in New Hope, Pennsylvania.
With her wedding to Miles just weeks away, Adelia returns to her horse ranch in San Ynez to break the news to her godfather Lucas. Lucas doubts Miles’s intentions and worries over the impetuousness of Adelia’s rush to marry.
While at her ranch, Adelia, in an effort to tidy up her parents’ affairs, finds a speech her father had planned to give at Green Week. What she finds convinces her that her parents’ deaths may not have been an accident – but murder. Her father, Lars Lindstrom, a world renowned founding father of the “green movement”, and her author, mother, Faye, had been key supporters through their Foundation of environmental organizations and charities. Lars had planned to announce a change of heart in his support of the movement and Adelia is convinced that this announcement would be so detrimental to the green movement that it may have cost her parents their lives. She convinces David that murder may be involved and he agrees to investigate.
After the wedding, on her dream-come-true honeymoon aboard Miles’s yacht, Adelia learns in a phone call with David that Miles served with her father on the corporate board of Solarian, a financially unstable high tech solar company and was suspiciously with her father at a board meeting on the day of her parents’ automobile accident. It is often said that there is no such thing as a coincidence. Because of the highly incriminating evidence that David uncovers, Adelia, begins to fear that she may be married to her parents’ murderer, and to add to her mounting anxiety, she discovers that she is pregnant by him
Keeping secret the murder investigation from Miles, and hopeful that he is not her parents’ murderer, Adelia returns to her new married life in New Hope. She gives birth to twins, Fallyn, and Liam, and continues to lead a charmed life.
Karolin, adamant that Adelia is The One, pressures Miles to keep his promise to her of divorcing Adelia and suing for custody of the children. In a heated exchange, Miles reveals that he has fallen deeply in love with Adelia and has no intention of giving her up. Karolin furiously warns, “It’s not over, Miles. It will never be over!”
David, stalled in his investigation of her parents’ murder, persuades Adelia to secretly gather information from Miles’s offices in Manhattan on a romantic weekend getaway. Reluctant to spy on her husband, but powerfully motivated to do so, she instigates a lover’s tryst, during which she is nearly caught stealing the incriminating evidence.
After the twins’ first birthday, Miles takes a business trip to London and Adelia and Karolin go for a weekend stay at the Plaza Hotel ostensibly to shop in New York. Karolin has masterminded an insidious plot to force Miles to keep his promise of divorcing Adelia and suing for custody of the twins. In New York, she drugs Adelia with ecstasy and LSD and hires two ex-cons to seduce and photograph Adelia in a compromising sexual encounter. Disaster strikes when Miles is blackmailed by the con men with sexually explicit photographs documenting her infidelity. Adelia, with no memory of the incident, begs Miles to believe that she is innocent. Blinded with jealousy and devastated by her betrayal Miles banishes her to San Ynez, but not before he takes her in a final lustful act of sexual dominance.
When David reads in the society pages that Adelia has returned to San Ynez without calling him, he goes in search of the answer. What he finds is a shadow of the self-possessed, confident competitor that he had known. Miles has sued for divorce and custody of the children and a defeated Adelia believes it is a fait accompli. David, however, believes that the evidence Adelia collected from Miles’s offices is enough to defeat him in court and keep custody of her children.
In a dramatic custody proceeding in Bucks County, Adelia and David come armed with a file they know will eliminate Miles’s bid for custody. As the two adversaries face-off, there is no doubt that Miles is straddling a fine line between love and obsessive hate of his soon to be ex-wife. When Miles reads the file of incriminating evidence that David and Adelia have together prepared, rather than lose everything and face prosecution, he reluctantly concedes primary custody to Adelia. Believing that her future is secure, a triumphant Adelia reunites with her twin two-year-olds. However, she is unaware that behind the windows of the Bremen mansion a drama is unfolding that will threaten her and her children’s future.
